What do campers have to say about Camp Arena Stage?

Since Since Camp Arena Stage is affiliated with a major theater, is it only a theater camp?
Not at all! Although Arena Stage is our
parent organization, Camp Arena Stage is a
multi-arts camp. This means we offer activities
in visual arts, music, dance medai and
recreation as well as theater. You’ll have many
exciting activities to choose from in creating
your personal schedule.
What
do I do when I get to camp?
Each and every day, including the first
day, begins with attendance. One counselor will
be your group leader throughout the four weeks
of camp, who will be a living home base just for
you. This counselor will be there to check you
in and take attendance in the morning, answer
your questions throughout the day, and listen to
your triumphs and concerns at the end of the
day. There will also be a central place for you
to drop off your WELL-MARKED lunch, which will
magically reappear at noon, all ready for
eating.
How
will I know where to go?
On the first day of camp, we’ll all take
a tour of the grounds. Camp will take place
within buildings (right next to one another) and
outdoors next to those same buildings. We
clearly mark the activity rooms and make sure
you know where you’re going. If you get lost –
just ask any staff member.
What will we do?
The short answer: a lot of fun stuff,
most of it arty, some of it not. For more
details, check out our

What if I don’t
like an activity?
You were so sure in April that jewelry
making was the thing to study, but now Imaging
Journal sounds really cool. Within reason and if
class size allows, you can switch into a
different Daily in the first three days. After
that though, there you stay. We do our best to
honor Daily choices, but we can’t always promise
you’ll get every activity you wanted. While we
won’t place you in a random activity, we might
place you in your second or third choices. We
want camp to be the best experience possible for
you and are certain that it will be no matter
what activities you take. Who knows? A Daily you
were uncertain about might be your favorite one
by the end of camp.
My best
friend is coming to Camp Arena Stage too. Can we
have the exact same schedule?
We’ll do our best to get the two of you
in at least one class together. Be sure to note
this request on your course selection form.
However, we make no guarantees. Each day there
is a time called “Choice,” when you choose your
activity. You and your friend can choose the
same activity every day if you want. Keep in
mind also that camp is a great opportunity to
meet new people from different places.
Whom
can I go to if I have a problem?
Any staff member will be happy to help
you. Really. Please don’t hesitate to ask. Don’t
forget, you have a group leader that is looking
out for you especially.
Where will we eat?
Mostly we’ll eat outside. The campus has
nice lawns, hills, gliders and patios where we
can spread out. If it’s raining or beastly hot,
we’ll eat inside.
What if it rains?
We will have camp as usual, but indoors.
You won’t get too wet…unless you go puddle
jumping for Choice.
Will I have a chance
to perform?
If you are in performance classes, you
will surely take the stage while at Camp Arena
Stage. Our daily Noontime Show will sometimes
feature campers in different activities. You
will surely have the opportunity to perform in
the our Arts Extravaganza. Parents are invited
to see you perform, and view displays of your
work and demonstrations of your new skills.
Do I have to
perform?
Some people love the spotlight. Others
prefer to work behind the scenes. Maybe you
prefer to speak through your writing and visual
art, rather than on stage, in front of people.
That’s fine! There will be different ways for
you to proudly present your work. However, you
may surprise yourself and discover you enjoy
being on stage. No one will force you to get on
stage, but we do encourage you to stretch
yourself. We think you’ll find camp is the
perfect environment to take risks. We are ready
to applaud your efforts.
What if I am too old to be a camper?
Camp Arena Stage employs a select group of rising high school juniors, seniors and recent graduates as counselors-in-training (CITs) and volunteers. CITs
and volunteers undergo a full week of staff
training and, during the camp session,
assist in activities and serve as group
leaders. Ideal candidates for these
positions should be mature, responsible,
energetic, and have arts interests and
experience working with young people.
Interested students should e-mail a letter
of interest/introduction to
camp@arenastage.org . Interviews are conducted in early Spring.
What do campers have to say about Camp Arena Stage?
- At camp I felt like I could be myself —
not worry about what others think.
- The best part of Camp Arena Stage was
the supportive camp community. Everyone
always got applause when they performed.
Everyone was really nice.
- I like creative writing because it
allowed me to write down all the little
stories I have in my head.
- I enjoyed meeting new people and working
on my artistic abilities.
- I could meet friends who are interested
in art too.
- My favorite thing about Camp Arena Stage
is the counselors. They love to help you if
you have a problem and they always have a
smile on their faces.
- I love the people here. Everyone comes
because they are interested in the things at
camp. That makes it easy to make friends.
