An artistic coming-of-age story in ten essays, There Must Be Happy Endings: On A Theater of Optimism & Honesty is a perfect gift for the artist or aspiring artist in your life. Megan Sandberg-Zakian wrote the book she wishes she’d had as a young artist: about directing with an open heart and rigorous mind… navigating the ethics of making hopeful art in an unjust and chaotic world… and how she, a queer, mixed-heritage, socially-engaged female theater director, found her way into a career, a practice, and a point of view fully her own. Sandberg-Zakian has opened the critical, creative and inclusive space in which others can gather and imagine together the next American Theater.

A recent Boston Globe review emphasized the book's resonance with the current moment, writing: “At a time of so much uncertainty, director Megan Sandberg-Zakian’s new collection of essays appears like a desperately needed balm.” OnStage Blog added, “There Must Be Happy Endings is the type of book we all need to read right now, an honest consideration of how hope drives the stories we tell; even, perhaps, how hope is the whole point.”
